{"id":18758,"date":"2012-04-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-04-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/regthink\/american-moderates-go-the-way-of-the-dodo\/"},"modified":"2025-02-05T13:10:11","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T13:10:11","slug":"american-moderates-go-the-way-of-the-dodo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.regthink.org\/en\/american-moderates-go-the-way-of-the-dodo\/","title":{"rendered":"American moderates go the way of the Dodo"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Over the past few years, the climate change debate has touched a new mammal on Planet Earth: the political animal.\u00a0 As the level of civil discourse on the Arab-Israeli conflict threatens to overheat, the gap between the real world and academia continues to grow. Today, as the Jewish and Israeli community moves further to the right of the political spectrum, the international left and the ivory tower continue to edge in the opposite direction.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As one camp rallies around the flag of the one-state solution and the Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment (BDS) movement, the other embraces hawkish territorial maximalism and has entered into an uneasy alliance with the Christian evangelical movements.\u00a0\u00a0 When viewed in juxtaposition, has the center been swallowed up in the techtonic movements of the political divide?<\/div>\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Two incidents reported only in the past few weeks bring this issue into sharp relief.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This month, news leaked to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2012\/04\/16\/ucla-professor-counseled-after-linking-course-page-political-petition\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2012\/04\/16\/ucla-professor-counseled-after-linking-course-page-political-petition\">press<\/a>\u00a0of an academic battle on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles.\u00a0 The incident pitted Dr. David Shorter, an associate professor of World Arts and Culture and his supporters, against the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amchainitiative.org\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/amchainitiative.org\/\">Amcha Initiative<\/a>\u00a0, a coalition of California-based pro-Israel faculty activists at other state institutions.\u00a0 According to the AMCHA complaint lodged with the UCLA academic senate, Shorter had utilized a portion of his course website for a class on \u201cTribal Worldviews\u201d to post links to pro-BDS websites.\u00a0 Under pressure, the senate chair unofficially censured Shorter and his department \u201ccounseled him\u201d that \u201cthe posting of such materials is inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While AMCHA leader and UC Santa Cruz lecturer Tammi Rossman-Benjamin praised this action, as &#8220;there are professors who misuse and abuse university positions and use academic freedom to promote their political agendas directed against Israel,&#8221; a group calling itself\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cascholars4academicfreedom.wordpress.com\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/cascholars4academicfreedom.wordpress.com\/\">California Scholars for Academic Freedom<\/a>\u00a0(CS4AF), has rushed to Shorter\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2012\/04\/california-scholars-for-academic-freedom-challenges-ucla-on-censure-of-prof-who-linked-to-bds-website.html\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2012\/04\/california-scholars-for-academic-freedom-challenges-ucla-on-censure-of-prof-who-linked-to-bds-website.html\">defense<\/a>\u00a0in their own letter to the academic senate chair.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Charging that Shorter\u2019s civil liberties have been violated by \u201ca well-known partisan duo who have been harassing California faculty for some time (AMCHA),\u201d they railed that, \u201cwe have here\u2026not only a probable violation of academic freedom, but also of due process\u2026that this string of events was provoked by a biased political group that has been attempting to silence anyone speaking about Palestinian issues only further makes a mockery of the faculty protocol at UCLA.\u201d\u00a0 It is unclear where the matter stands today.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It is perhaps unsurprising that Shorter was a signatory to a letter of protest over an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/frontpagemag.com\/2012\/04\/27\/freedom-center-hits-back-against-bds-in-new-york-times-ad\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/frontpagemag.com\/2012\/04\/27\/freedom-center-hits-back-against-bds-in-new-york-times-ad\/\">advertisement<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0placed by David Horowitz\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.horowitzfreedomcenter.org\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.horowitzfreedomcenter.org\/\">Freedom Center<\/a>\u00a0(an organization billing itself as \u201cdedicated to the defense of free societies whose moral, cultural, and economic foundations are under attack by leftist and Islamist enemies at home and abroad\u201d) following a lecture at the University of Pennsylvania. The advertisement implicitly compares the BDS movement to the Nazi regime and claims it \u201ccalls for a new Holocaust,\u201d and makes \u201cancient blood libels become modern day massacres,\u201d including \u201ccontributing to an atmosphere of hate\u201d that \u201cspawned\u201d the murders at a Jewish school in Toulousse, France.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In particular, Horowitz points fingers at several activist professors (including former Weatherman Bill Ayers, Kent State Professor Julio Pino [who I have written about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.regthink.org\/en\/me-and-julio-down-by-the-schoolyard\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.canthink.co.il\/%D7%94%D7%96%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%94-%D7%94%D7%91%D7%99%D7%A0%D7%9C%D7%90%D7%95%D7%9E%D7%99%D7%AA\/me-and-julio-down-by-the-schoolyard.aspx\">previously<\/a>], and Columbia University\u2019s Joseph Massad) who he suggests should be \u201cpublically shamed and condemned for the crimes their hatred incites.\u201d A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jadaliyya.com\/pages\/index\/5278\/us-based-professors-respond-to-nyt-ad-accusing-pro\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.jadaliyya.com\/pages\/index\/5278\/us-based-professors-respond-to-nyt-ad-accusing-pro\">counter-advertisement<\/a>\u00a0undersigned by 151 professors condemned Horowitz, who they allege \u201cshut down informed debate\u201d through his own use of \u201cthe language of hatred and bigotry.\u201d\u00a0 The war of words seemingly continues between the two parties.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On a personal note, as an academic who considers herself a Zionist but is aware of the both the nuances and flaws of Israeli society today, I myself have been caught between these two polarizing currents.\u00a0 Without significant effort and commitment by all parties to bridge the gap between these two extreme positions, centrist voices will be lost.\u00a0 I fear that myself and other moderates will soon go the way of the dodo \u2014 our extinction may soon be the latest casualty of the Arab-Israeli conflict.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past few years, the climate change debate has touched a new mammal on Planet Earth: the political animal.\u00a0 As the level of civil discourse on the Arab-Israeli conflict threatens to overheat, the gap between the real world and academia continues to grow.
