Geopolitics, economics and personal analysis of leaders on the one hand, horror stories and heroics on the other, are much more common. But understanding the effects of war is equally important to understanding its course.

Thus, this month we use artistic expression as a lens to explore the war’s impact on Gazan society, alongside the geo-strategic dynamics that shape it.

Rashid Masharawi is one of the most well-known Palestinian cinema creators. He is a native of Gaza, a son of refugees from Jaffa. His work is centered around the experiences of being Palestinian, and his most recent creation is a unique gaze into the lives of Gazans during the harrowing experiences of the war. It is simply named “ From Ground Zero – Stories from Gaza”, was first screened in 2024, and even got an Academy Award nomination.

Last month we published a review of the project, by Forum fellow Tali Silberstein.

The project is a full length film, combining 22 short films by local Gazan creators supported by Masharawi’s Gazan filmmakers’ support fund. Masharawi described his choosing process as a search for personal stories portrayed in film, aiming to show both the creators’ emotions and their unique cinematic style.

Silberstein notes that the creators, most of them still in Gaza, are not film students, as this field was not taught in Gaza even before the war. Instead, they are students from different art fields, or other types of schooling such as journalism or media, and sometimes completely self-taught.

The movie ends on a grim note, when the same film slate clapping is combined with the bombing of a nearby building, and Hassouna apologizes to the camera, puts it aside and runs away

Appropriately, Silberstein reminds us that the film is named “From Ground Zero”. This might mean the stories come from a levelled Gaza strip, a “Ground Zero” of ruins. Alternatively, the name might point to the groundedness of the films in the Gazan reality. A third option emphasizes the word “From” – the filmmakers might be in “ground zero”, but they strive to rise from the ruins to a better place.

Ahmed Hassouna’s film “Sorry, Cinema” is a prime example of this last interpretation. It is a heartfelt documentation of Hassouna, a journalism graduate, struggling to succeed in the cinematic world, of his aspirations and his achievements.

Starting optimistically with the clapping of a film slate during another busy day of filming, Hassouna’s movie describes how he created documentaries and feature films, some of them even participated in festivals and won awards – all without being able to leave the strip or even seeing his films screened in front of a real audience.

But it ends on a grim note, when the same film slate clapping is combined with the bombing of a nearby building, and Hassouna apologizes to the camera, puts it aside and runs away from the grey smoke of the bombings between the ruins of his home town. A journey that started from Ground Zero ends, crashing back to reality, due to the all-consuming war.

Another example is the film “Taxi Wanissa” by the veteran director Etimad Washah. It starts as a work of fiction, starring the driver of a “Taxi” – really, a cart drawn by a donkey named Wanissa.

All of these show how deeply art was changed by the hopelessness and ruthlessness of war, but also how it reflects the hope for a different future

The driver leaves his “house” – really, a tent, with his four children sleeping on a mattress on the ground. The film shows the daily drive through the local crowd, picking up passengers and their luggage, until suddenly it cuts to black. Etimad, the director, shows and speaks about the death of her brother, Nasim, and his children, who were killed during the film creation.

The tragedy, according to Etimad, made her realize that her art must end with her personal testimony about the uncontrollable reality of war.

Other parts of Masharawi’s project reflect different aspects of this reality: a Documentary about “Sol Band”, a musical group playing and singing between the refugee tents, giving children hope for change and an example of beauty; The story of a stand-up comedian insisting on performing in the ruins of his bombed venue; The return of an artist to her bombed studio, running what was left of her pieces. All of these show how deeply art was changed by the hopelessness and ruthlessness of war, but also how it reflects the hope for a different future. Thus, to understand the reality from which these works emerge, we now turn to an examination of Israel’s evolving security doctrine.

The reality that artists in Gaza experienced is not a horror devoid of context. It’s rooted in the destructionist nature of the new Israeli warfare, which treats mass demolition as a goal in itself, and is disconnected from the supposed goal of any military action – improving security and promoting a safer geopolitical environment. This is a result of a deep change in the Israeli defense paradigm, which is analysed in two reviews on the Forum website.

The support fund for Gazan filmmakers established by Masharawi invited local creators to bring to the screen the Gaza that is beyond the news. These were usually a response to supposed provocations. They served as tools for containment and buying silence on the border, especially in Gaza. By contrast, any attempts at diplomacy with Syria, Lebanon, or Palestinian actors were rejected outright by political and military leadership.

Diplomatic tools were reserved for relations with Gulf states and the failed attempts for reaching an Israeli-Saudi agreement.

Meanwhile, occupation and control deepened in the West Bank. The blockade on Gaza tightened. This approach didn’t deliver real security. Violent non-state actors took root in Gaza and Lebanon, backed by Iran. Yet for years, they were deemed serious problems but not existential threats. No genuine effort was made to eliminate or change them, perhaps from recognizing that would be a genuinely futile attempt.

October 7’s trauma ended this path. Israel shifted from a focus on internal affairs and containment to an aggressive external strategy. Two brutal years of war in Gaza followed, marked by killing, destruction, and displacement.

But the conflict paused without real resolution, with an immense human cost. Now Gaza is in a supposed and ineffective ceasefire, but with no real prospects for the future, with the Israeli military entrenched at the “Yellow Line,” with ongoing low-intensity strikes. In the same fashion, Hamas tries to reclaim its power and shift the status quo in its favor, without collapsing the ceasefire.

In Lebanon, aggressive attempts to collapse Hezbollah failed. Israel shifted to capturing territories, to total destruction of towns and villages, and continuous strikes. In Syria-despite posing no real threat to Israel and the new government’s attempts at achieving a security agreement-Israel seized and is holding territory.

October 7’s trauma and right-wing radicalization silence all other discourse inside Israel. Calls for diplomacy or long-term security arrangements without renewed fighting are silenced

This reveals Israel’s new security doctrine: aggressive warfare in neighboring states, territorial seizure, and destruction of existing to push fighting away from Israeli borders.

Barak describes this as a predetermined failure. He proposes strengthening regional governments-Lebanon’s and the Palestinian Authority-that have interests in settlement with Israel (as does Syria’s new government).

If Barak outlines how Israel’s doctrine has changed outwardly toward its neighbors, Aviv Tatarsky focuses on the domestic roots of this shift and on how they sustain a destructive vision of “permanent security” – absolute elimination of all threats. This is an unrealistic premise, yet security and government leaders won’t admit this publicly. Instead, Israeli strength and desire for change are exploited to justify massive destruction as an end in itself.

Previous articles published on our website reviewed the methods of total destruction. Tatarsky shows how destruction narratives replace genuine security efforts. Even in the West Bank, where armed activity is limited, this destruction is expanded – from refugee camps to Bedouin villages, attacked by army and settler gangs alike. The violence and destruction allegedly “remove” threats. But in reality, they fuel hatred, resistance, and the struggle against Israel.

Conversely, October 7’s trauma and right-wing radicalization silence all other discourse inside Israel. Calls for diplomacy or long-term security arrangements without renewed fighting are silenced. Tatarsky shows how instead, Israel elevates figures like Abraham Zarbiv – a Rabbi and engineering corps reservist promoting wholesale house demolition – as moral guides. Such people promote the false, dangerous notion that every enemy and threat can be “defeated” through escalating force.

This approach rejects peace or settlement. It demands heavy prices from Israeli society. Yet Tatarsky shows clearly: these war costs aren’t destined. They result from a specific security doctrine-one we can and should change.

Lebanon-Where To?

Lebanon entered the conflict against the will of much of its people and political establishment. Returning to war mid-March, after and Israel’s aggressive strikes in the south and Beirut triggered direct negotiations with Israel. For years, such talks seemed impossible. In his article, Elitzur Gluck examines Lebanese discourse on these negotiations. Deep divisions emerged between Hezbollah supporters and opponents.

Hezbollah opponents argued exactly that – the organization became a magnet for unwanted wars. It can’t shape the decisions of war and peace unilaterally

For years, Hezbollah positioned itself as Lebanon’s protector-from Israel and other threats. This image took hard hits from the Pager attacks ,Hasan Nasrallah’s assassination, and the invasion in the fall of 2024.

Yet the real blow came after Israel’s latest strikes, responding to limited rocket fire-mostly expressing solidarity with Iran. When the acts of Hezbollah taken without any discussions with the state, brought war upon Lebanon rather than prevent it, presenting the organization as protector became much harder.

Hezbollah opponents argued exactly that – the organization became a magnet for unwanted wars. It can’t shape the decisions of war and peace unilaterally. Gluck quotes the supporters of president Joseph Aoun and prime minister Nawaf Salam’s government as saying that direct negotiations became necessary for the country’s security. They blame Hezbollah for dragging Lebanon into Iran’s war, while Iran abandons it.

Yet it should be noted that Iran, after these articles were first published, pressured the US and Israel into a partial ceasefire in Lebanon, a ceasefire just as fragile as any other ceasefire with Israel.

In return, Hezbollah supporters express deep disappointment and betrayal toward the direct negotiations. They foresee failure and see negotiating with Israel as an act of treason and corruption, and a part of pro-American elites’ privatization project. In their eyes, the negotiations signal weakness. They can’t stop Israeli strikes or territorial seizure in south Lebanon.

Gluck notes that some writers claim such strikes alienate even supporters of Israel like the Lebanese Christian right parties, proving to them that Lebanon’s security doctrine is equal to unconditional surrender.

Afterword

This piece is an attempt to bridge the gap between the classic analysis of war as a geopolitical issue and the view of it as a human individual experience.

The hope and despair expressed in Gazan wartime art reflect the profound suffering of Gazan society, shaped by a climate of fear that drives ever more aggressive tactics and deepens regional divides.

If full-scale war returns in Iran, Gaza or Lebanon, it must be understood as a result of a fear-fuelled push for “absolute security”, and there must be an effort to push the truth – no such absolute security is possible through sheer force. There has to be an effort toward peace.

Israel has shifted to an offensive policy, and the IDF is taking control of territories on the other side of the border while establishing “security zones” within them for an indefinite period.
